Social Entrepreneur Incubator
This project is a product of studying Architecture in Barcelona, Spain with the CIEE Study Abroad Program. The idea of ‘social entrepreneurship’ has gained recognition in recent years as government agencies are downsized and their responsibilities outsourced to non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Architects and designers can be seen as ‘entrepreneurs’ when they initiate projects rather than respond to a brief that is handed to them by a client; i.e. when architects embark on an entrepreneurial venture. This design studio invesitgated the potential of architecture to engage in as well as to facilitate social enterprise. Its modus operandi, in keeping with the spirit of social entrepreneurship, will be that of an ‘unsolicited design proposal’ for an ‘Incubator for Social Enterprise’ in the El Raval neighborhood of Barcelona.
